As a civil engineer, coming to a big company like CMC was a big move towards growing my career. Picasso. Matisse. Billy Rodriguez? New artists can come from anywhere. They just need the materials to get started. For over four decades, CMC has proudly sponsored the “Scrap Can Be Beautiful” program in conjunction with the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas. This program provides scrap metal for students to create incredible works of art — like the amazing pieces below!

"Big Horn" is a male big horn sheep - a ram. These sheep show traits of strength, determination, and agility. I see these rams as a reflection of myself. It's up to me to have the strength to create art, be determined to do my best, and have the agility while sculpting.

Working with random geometric shapes made of steel gave me an industrialized feel when looking at the pile of scrap metal I compiled. The head piece was a box and, that not being an organic shape, led me to create a robot.

My piece was of a life-sized shopping cart, and I made this piece because it reminds me a lot of summer. The shopping cart makes me think of being a kid and riding around in them whenever I went to the store with my parents. It also represents and embodies my summer of 2022 experience where I would go around in random shopping carts and just explore.

For my Scrap Can Be Beautiful piece, I chose to weld a flower. For this project I wanted to try something on the simpler side, since it would be my second time welding. The final result of my piece turned out just how I wanted it to, if not better.

A few years ago I took a trip to San Francisco and while visiting I went to the harbor walk and saw the sea lions in the water. I took pictures of them and saved them, planning to make some type of art about them.

My piece "vikori" is a vulture made from saw blades and chain links. The word "vulture" is used as an insult calling someone a "scavenger". With that, people see these birds as ugly and dirty, but I think they're much more. I say, they can be beautiful.

I created Hei Hei out of old farm tools and metal that some would see as useless. I chose to make this animal since hens and roosters were a big part of my childhood in some way or another.

I chose to do orchids for how beautifully they capture attention. The meaning of charm, love and beauty in the orchids inspired me. The flowy movement and the shape each orchid holds, the chain wrapped around like magic.
